چکیده

We have extended the two-dimensional geodynamics finite-element code ‘‘Ellipsis’’ to three-dimensions. Ellipsis uses a hybrid particle in a cell scheme, which combines a fixed mesh of computational points and a dense arrangement of mobile material points. The fixed Eulerian mesh allows very fast computation, performed in Ellipsis via a multigrid iteration method, while the Lagrangian particle reference frame allows the tracking of material interfaces and history-dependent properties such as strain history for strain-softening materials. The method is exceptionally useful in very large deformation analyses, where purely Lagrangian approaches would be severely hampered by the need for remeshing to minimize element distortion. The Gnu Public Licensed Ellipsis3D code lends itself to combined 2D/3D model prototyping, and has proven to be an excellent geodynamics teaching tool for modelling, covering mantle convection, lithospheric extension and plume–lithosphere interaction. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Mantle Convection Modeling with Viscoelastic/Brittle Lithosphere: Numerical and Computational Methodology

The Earth’s tectonic plates are strong, viscoelastic shells which make up the outermost part of a thermally convecting, predominantly viscous layer; at the boundaries between plates the rheology is thought to be dominated by brittle processes. Brittle failure of the lithosphere occurs when stresses are high. In order to build a realistic simulation of the planet’s evolution, the complete viscoe...

On the state of sublithospheric upper mantle beneath a supercontinent

S U M M A R Y An assumption of isothermal and static asthenosphere as the normal state of sublithospheric mantle, as commonly employed in studies of terrestrial magmatism, may be physically implausible for a system cooled from above. The growth of an unstable thermal boundary layer at the base of the lithosphere can lead to small-scale convection, so asthenosphere is expected to be usually conv...

Convective modelling of gravity, topography and melt generation at the Tharsis Rise, Mars

The observed long-wavelength gravity and topography at the Tharsis Rise, and the inferred heat flux and melt generation rate, are modelled using a convection code. The code is axisymmetric and isoviscous and incorporates a conductive lid and the effects of lithospheric rigidity on the observables. Models which fit the observations have high mantle viscosities (5-28×10 Pa s) and 80% or less inte...

Seismic anisotropy: tracing plate dynamics in the mantle.

Elastic anisotropy is present where the speed of a seismic wave depends on its direction. In Earth's mantle, elastic anisotropy is induced by minerals that are preferentially oriented in a directional flow or deformation. Earthquakes generate two seismic wave types: compressional (P) and shear (S) waves, whose coupling in anisotropic rocks leads to scattering, birefringence, and waves with hybr...

Fossilized lithospheric deformation revealed by teleseismic shear wave splitting in eastern China

Global mantle convection significantly impacts the processes at Earth’s surface and has been used to gain insights on plate driving forces, lithospheric deformation, and the thermal and compositional structure of the mantle. Upper-mantle seismic anisotropy has been widely employed to study both present and past deformation processes at lithospheric and asthenospheric depths. The eastern China r...
